Hello everyone!

It's been some time ServeBatam2010 ended.
Just a little sharing of how i felt about the whole trip. Personally, when serving the community overseas, i learnt more about myself and how to be a better individual through the service. Also, managed to see how I as an individual can give back to the society. Learning the importance of proper communicating with others to prevent mis-conceptions/understandings. They say a picture tells a thousand words. I say an expression tells a thousand pictures. HAHHA.

Personally, the thing about the children in the orphanage which i find very astonishing is without a doubt, their innocents. Was just reading about the various meaningful quotes and i chanced upon this quote by Allan K. Chalmers, "The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." Everyone has something to do, something to love and something to hope for. Maybe it is because of the busy lifestyle we lead, we hardly stop by for a break and think, what is it that is lacking in our daily lives that is preventing us to be like the kids in batam?

I'm sure there are many different ways which we can give back to the community, be it locally or overseas. However, it's like what diana said in her speech during the trip. Even now, weeks after we came back from batam. I ask myself, how long would the "fire" last before it gets extinguished or would it flare up?

Of course, not forgetting the skills we learned while performing our service there in batam. All of us came back here safely. Only difference may not be tangible, however, the undeniable fact is that all of us now has a new skill. Be it painting, scraping the walls, or even simply trying to understand people from their actions/expressions.

Although the trip was only for a short 5 days. I'm sure the kids in batam now has something else they can be proud of. Even though sometimes it feels like we could have done more

Lastly, I thank all of you for giving me this chance to work with all of you.

Hello Serve Batam Crew!

Personally, this trip to Batam has indeed taught me alot of things. Not only did I learn how to cherish and how to be grateful,I also learnt how to be contented.I believe this trip also presented each and everyone of us in the crew an opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and take a look at reality outside the "world" we live in.

For Anna and Diana, they rekindled their passion to serve but I think many of us are only starting to plant the seed for the passion of serving. Therefore, we shouldn't just stop at one serve trip and continue lending a helping hand to the less fortunate.Because we are able to do much more than some people,we are more fortunate than them. Hence,we should give more back to the community and people who need us! I hope we do not just stop here :)

Once again thank you to Mr Ben Tan, Mr William Lim and Ms Rosa Koh for taking care of us during the trip! To fellow crew members, I think we did a great job!

Looking forward to afterglow!
Xin Yi ♥

Hi Serve Batam Crews,

First of all, I would really wish to thank to Mr Tan, I am able to defer my internship and join the crew.

It has been an enriching and memorable experience for me to be part of the team to serve the community. I also wish to thanks all the people for making this trip a success and fruitful one fill with joy and passion. This trip had taught me to appreciate the “luxury life” I have in Singapore and rekindle the passion to continue to serve the community. This trip remind me of the community trip to Yunnan, China where I undergo the harsh climate without bed and toilet yet the whole crew really enjoy ourselves and feel a great satisfaction for the achievement we done. Similarly, I felt the satisfaction able to give the children a better environment. Although, it may be a simple coat of paint and playing with the kids, but I believe we are building a better future for the kids.

Hence, I hope all of you will continue to play your part to the community and keep the passion burning..=D

Cheers,

Anna

Serve Batam 2010 was yet another enriching and memorable experience for me. It rekindle the fire in me to help those that are in need. It also serve as a reminder for me to be grateful, contented and appreciative.

The kids in Batam and Cambodia have been through the growing pains of poverty, the seperation of their loved ones, yet they can move on with an optimistic attitude, not wallowing in self pity. Living in poverty is part of their life, yet they hardly grumble. On the contrary they are grateful and contented with what they have and they give thanks to the lord above.

These kids have taught us to count our blessings, and that what have been given is sometimes enough, if not more than what we require, yet as humans living in an economically stable country we do not seem to know the ends of our wants.

A fellow crew from Serve Cambodia 2009 once said "The children may have little in terms of material things, but wealth in the things unseen." I totally agree with the statement she made. As their unpretentious laughter derived from simple little things beyond the aspect of materiality.

This is what we should learn from the kids, to look at things beyond the aspect of materiality.

Serve Trips never fail to make me reflect on all the things I have in life and be thankful of every single little things that I owned. I am blessed to have a roof over my head, three sumptuous meal a day and all the love I have got from my family for twenty-two years.

with lots of love,

diana
